Answers to common questions about linking to Perlego from your library system

 If you're linking to Perlego from a library management system, discovery layer, or reading list platform it's important the links point directly to Perlego without a proxy, redirector, or authentication wrapper appended. Here's why, and what to use instead.

Why shouldn't I append a proxy to my Perlego book links?

Perlego book links are designed to work as clean, direct URLs — for example https://www.perlego.com/book/123456/.... Appending a proxy prefix (such as an EZproxy stem) to a Perlego link can break the link entirely, send your users to an error page, or route them through an authentication step that Perlego doesn't expect or support.

Note: This applies even if the proxy works correctly for your other e-resources. Perlego's access model doesn't require proxy authentication, so adding one only introduces a point of failure.

Does Perlego support OpenAthens Redirector?

No. Perlego doesn't currently support the OpenAthens Redirector service for library links. If your OpenAthens configuration wraps outbound links in a redirector URL, this should be excluded for any Perlego links specifically.

Does Perlego support WAYFless URLs?

No. WAYFless URLs (which skip the "Where Are You From" institution-selection step by embedding institution information in the link) are not supported for Perlego. Perlego book and platform links should be used exactly as provided, without a WAYFless wrapper.

What should I use instead of a proxy or redirector?

We recommend using a clean Perlego URL in your library system link field, combined with Automatic Account Creation. This uses Domain Restrictions to create a trust relationship with your organisation's approved email domains — when a user signs up or logs in with an email address on that approved list, they're automatically granted a subscription from your purchased pool, with no admin effort and no proxy, redirector, or manual approval step required.

To enable this, you'll need to provide your list of eligible email domains and set up an access link for auto-created accounts to register against — see Set up Automatic Account Creation.

What happens if I do append a proxy or redirector to my links?

Users may see a broken link, a login screen Perlego doesn't recognise, or be redirected somewhere unexpected. If your users are reporting access issues from library system or reading list links, check whether a proxy or redirector has been added to the Perlego URL and remove it as a first troubleshooting step.
