IP Allowlisting & Authentication

Some institutions ask whether they can give their users access to Perlego based on their network location (IP address). This article explains why Perlego doesn't support this, and what we use instead.

 

What is IP allowlisting or IP authentication?

IP allowlisting (also called IP authentication) is a method some platforms use to grant access automatically to anyone connecting from a recognised network, for example anyone on a university's campus Wi-Fi or VPN. No individual login is required; the platform simply checks the visitor's IP address against an approved list.

Does Perlego support IP allowlisting or IP authentication?

No. Perlego doesn't support IP-based access. Every user needs an individual account to access your organisation's subscription.

Why doesn't Perlego support this?

A few reasons:

  • Perlego is built around individual accounts, not shared network access. Each user's reading history, bookmarks, annotations, and progress are tied to their personal profile — something IP authentication can't support, since it doesn't identify who the person is.
  • Off-campus and mobile access. Your users need to read on the train, at home, or on their phone — not just when connected to your institution's network. IP allowlisting would lock them out the moment they leave campus Wi-Fi.
  • Security and licensing integrity. Individual authentication lets us verify exactly who is using the subscription, which protects against unauthorised sharing of access and keeps usage data accurate for your reporting. It is also important to protect our publishing partners content and adhere to our agreements with them.

How do users access Perlego instead?

Users can access your organisation's subscription through:

  • Single Sign-On - if configured, users log in with their existing institutional credentials.
  • Individual sign-up - using an approved institutional email domain and an access code

Can we request IP allowlisting as a custom feature?

This isn't something we're able to offer, as it conflicts with how individual accounts, usage tracking, and licensing work across the platform. If your institution has specific requirements around network-based access, get in touch with your account manager to talk through the alternatives available.
