Our AI Principles: using technology responsibly

Perlego recently launched the  tool Smart Search, and it has enhanced over 140,000 searches so far. As we continue harnessing artificial intelligence to achieve our mission of making education accessible to all, we’ve outlined the values that will guide us. 

These 4 Principles are designed to ensure we embrace AI thoughtfully, responsibly and collaboratively with the education and publishing community:

1. Support rather than replace: We implement AI to support and enhance, not replace, the learning experience.
2. Collaboration & trust: We create trust by consulting our HigherEd & publishing partners on AI.
3. Mitigate against bias: We work hard to prevent the introduction of unfair bias through AI on Perlego.
4. Privacy as the standard: We respect the privacy and intellectual property of our users and partners.

A key area where we look to address these principles in practice is learner impact: 

Protecting learner autonomy

Our use of AI will always be to enhance and support human learning, not replace the core learning experience. When we leverage AI at Perlego, we will aim to put more knowledge and agency in the hands of learners, helping them discover the most relevant content for their needs and engage with it in more impactful ways. Where possible, we commit to taking steps to avoid over-reliance on AI to prevent hindering cognitive and critical thinking development.

Promoting plural opinions

While AI makes it easier than ever to discover new perspectives, if harnessed without proper human oversight, there is a risk of AI bias and promotion of dominant worldviews. We commit to working hard to counteract this possibility and to ensure that AI is used to promote an environment that encourages diverse perspectives and critical thinking.

Accessibility

In line with our company mission, we are committed to making our AI-powered features as inclusive and accessible as possible to all learners, irrespective of their background, location, or learning capabilities. We will always be conscious of the diverse needs, abilities, and learning styles of our users

Maintaining privacy

We will be responsible gatekeepers of any learner data used to power AI features on Perlego, ensuring robust data governance, never selling personal data to third parties, and never allowing this data to be used for training public large language models (LLMs).
